The Austin Aztex announced today the first four additions to the 2014 USL PDL roster. Joining the Aztex for the summer season are returning players Tony Rocha and Devin Cook along with former Oklahoma City FC players Adam Black and Danny Frid.
Rocha and Cook, both of whom were recognized on the 2013 Southern All-Conference team, have played for the Aztex since the inaugural 2012 season. Rocha and Cook will be part of a core of returning players from the championship-winning 2013 Austin Aztex squad.
Rocha, a 20-year old midfielder from the University of Tulsa, is a native of Houston. Rocha led the 2013 Aztex in playing time with 1,621 minutes in 20 games played. As a catalyst in the midfield, Rocha scored four goals and added five assists across all competitions. Cook, a 20-year-old goalkeeper from Coastal Carolina, is a hometown player who attended high school at Stony Point. Cook finished the 2013 season with a 14-1-1 record and a goals-against average of 0.369 in all competitions. In addition to his recognition as an All-Conference player, Cook was also a finalist for the PDL Goalkeeper of the Year award and the Young Player of the Year award.
“We are delighted to announce the return of Tony Rocha and Devin Cook to be a part of the team for the 2014 Season,” Aztex Head Coach Manuel Buentello said. “Tony and Devin were two of the best players on the team and were instrumental in achieving our league championship. They will continue to provide the continuity needed with their experience and leadership to aspire to great things in 2014.”
Black and Frid helped lead Oklahoma City FC to and 8-4-2 record in their 2013 campaign and play collegiately at Oklahoma City University. Black, a 21-year-old forward from Liverpool, England, scored 11 goals and added an assist in the 2013 campaign. The 11 goals was enough for Black to be recognized alongside Rocha and Cook as a USL PDL Southern All-Conference player. Frid, a 25-year-old defender from Raunds, England, scored three goals and added three assists in 11 games at OKC FC.
“We are also very excited to sign to the Austin Azex two outstanding individuals in Adam Black and Danny Frid from Oklahoma City,” Buentello said. “These were two of the league’s top players and two of our toughest competitors during the 2013 season. I am thrilled to see them wearing the navy and gold in 2014. Adam and Danny are a great example of the organization’s objectives of attracting the best talent from around the country to Austin.”
“The Aztex’s journey continues to attract the best talent from around the country, much like it did in 2012 and later, in 2013. We will continue to provide a unique opportunity for the best players in the area and are looking forward to a new and exciting season in 2014.”
The Aztex return to the field in 2014 to begin their title defense in May. The Aztex will conduct their final tryouts with the Collegiate Trial on Saturday, March 15 and the Open/Community Trial on Sunday, March 16.
